Silkworms

Emilyisrad Apr 25, 2005 01:29 AM

I am absolutely petrified by the crickets I feed my beardie. I was wondering if I could feed him silkworms as an alternative? Could I feed him silkworms instead of the crickets or are crickets still a must? Also, I would like to raise silkworms and have read all of the articles. It seems difficult...is it really as hard as it seems?

Silkworms are actually better then crix so yes feed away! My aunt raises silkie and its not hard, kinda pricy to get started but it pays off in the end.My mom has just recently started a colony of silkie and I have started a colony of roaches,no more nasty crix for us.

silkworms are a good alternative insect food for bearded dragons. Roaches are also good, expecially the smaller softer bodied roaches. Silkworms are not very hard to raise, just keep them clean, store the eggs in the fridge for a few months, take out some eggs and keep them around 70-75F and they should hatch in about 10 days. Put thin strips of silkworm chow near the hatchlings and let them eat that, adding new strips every day and once they all crawl off the old chow, remove it. Once they start getting bigger you can move them into a clean container to grow more as necessary. The important thing is to make sure they stay clean as bacteria or mold can kill off the entire batch.
