Sandhills Field Herping trip

Sweet_Pickle Apr 25, 2005 08:47 AM

Blueking, WesternNC, and Kevin went field herping with me in the Sandhills last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

We caught, photographed, and released almost 40 snakes.

However, we kept a couple of the snakes... including an Eastern King female that Blueking flipped on Friday morning.

The first pic is of all of us on Saturday morning.

I was so happy that Zee (Blueking) flipped this 3' female...

Nice! I like seeing the shots of how they are found. Have any closeups of that king?

BlueKing Apr 25, 2005 08:15 PM

A georgeous 3.5' female with the nice classic "chain" look!
She's got a big (recent) scar on the side of her body that almost encircles it. . .Maybe a cat? Other than that she's doing great and had just eaten a large snake prior to me finding her. Her body was swollen all the way up to the base of her neck! Soon I may be able to find out what she ate. . .Maybe a corn, maybe a water snake, maybe a racer, garter snake, who knows?
Anyway. . .enjoy the pic. . . (Almost forgot: Richmond county, NC. locale)

... I was standing right next to him - I was actually pretty happy for him.

Later that day I found my first Corn Snake in the wild so I was happy - King or not.

Man we had the best time and are gonna do it again next April. You should consider flying to BWI and then riding down with me.

Brad Bauserman is going next year as well...

What's a fellow eastern brother gotta do to swing an invite to that event?!?

Will

BlueKing Apr 26, 2005 08:42 PM

Just show up!!! I know that's easier said than done (if you live in Buffalo). It really IS nice here though - never realized it considering I only live 40 miles from the area!
Like they say: What is the last creature to discover water? Fish, becasue they live in it, LOL!

Should be NO problem! There'll be plenty. If the weather is just right next month, then I can say the same for alternas!
Did you get my e-mail? I'll give you a call in a few days!

Yeah, got it this morning. I'm not worried, just jealous!! Too much work and not enough field makes Todd a dull boy, LOL! Going out today for calligaster and holbrooki. Tonight for annulata. Damn moon, at least it is a very late rise and temps at night are holding around 70. C'mon, rain!! Need the anurans to prompt the colubrids.

70's at night? Wow! Now I'm getting jealous! It's still in the low 50's here! But it has been getting better during the day with highs in the 70's & 80's. . . Good luck - watch out for those crotalus atrox's there's a bunch of em' down there this time of year!

Great score Zee! That is an unbelievably beautiful eastern. I also love the bright yellow. I can see it now, Zee's line of easterns that look like jungle carpet pythons. Freakin' awesome!

Thanks Will! Now we'll have to see if she's gravid (after she digests that big snake she ate). I will try to take some outdoor pics of her soon!
By the way, the two S.Ga. kings (I got from you) are doing great, the female did refuse a few meals, but she's taking at least one every other week and more. The male is eating twice a week whatever I give him, LOL! He's really putting on size and passed up his half sister a while ago (they use to be the same size).

Sounds like you guys had a super weekend. By all means, post more pics of the wonderful animals you found. I'll be in North Carolina this weekend myself, but not field herping, I'll be at the Raleigh show.

I expected to find a few more E. kings, but the weather has been a little tricky in the month prior to this trip (though the weather was nice & warm last week). Shold see a few more soon!
