Does my tegu have vision problems?

reptilian9 Jul 10, 2003 10:50 PM

I'm wondering if there's something wrong with my tegu's eyes. They look fine, and he is not having trouble eating, but I've been paying close attention and his eyes are always looking behind his head, as if he's looking behind him. I've never seen his pupils shift forwards, it's like he's always watching his back. Is this normal? One time I dangled some food in front of him and he completely missed, but he's pretty good about it now. Only did that to check his vision. Another reason I wonder is it seems he never looks really where he's going. I could be holding him 10 feet in the air and he'll just walk off my hands (he does test to see if he feels anything under him, although he usually will just drop anyway - of course I catch him). He's about 6 months I'm guessing, but it seems like he can't look forward. I know these lizards' eyes are on the sides of their heads, but my water dragon could move her pupils around to focus forward. My tegu is always looking backwards it seems. I posted my only close up picture; I'll try and take a better one. Thanks if anybody can help. I have an arg. red.

Hi my name is Ali. I had a blue tegu with a similar problem. I think you should take him to a qualified herp vet right away. THere are a few things that should be checked out: hypoglycemia, (pupils don't contract when you shine light in his eyes, either) metabolic problems, neurological problems. I hope you the best.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will go to a vet asap. I shined a flashlight in his eyes, and his pupils did contract, so I guess that's good. I will try to get a close up of his eyes so I can show everybody.
