What is and isnt safe to eat outside?

joebob Apr 25, 2005 04:11 PM

Summer's back and this year my beardie is big enough that I can let her go outside (under supervision, of course)

The problem is that it is basically an all-you-can-eat buffet out there for her, she tries to eat everything! I know fireflies are bad (by the way, does anybody know if they exist up in Canada?) but is there anything else I should make sure not to let her eat?

I have a list of some of the more common edible plants on my site. Nasturtiums are a favorite with my beardies! Just click on the link below and go to the Nutrition Content Page. The list is towards to bottom of the Nutrition page...

dandelions. Unfortunately there's only one spot on our property that they haven't been sprayed and it's shady and cool there all the time.

I shy away from letting her eat bugs because I don't know where they've been!

Most of the bugs outside aren't good for the dragon to eat, mainly due to the chance the bugs have had contact with insecticides or fertilizers, especially if you have a small yard and your neighbours spray/fertilize their lawns recently. I would try to keep him in a plastic rubbermaid cage so he has less contact with bugs from outside.

There deffinitely are fireflies here in Canada. In ontario/quebec anyway, not sure about out west or the east coast. They are soft bodied beetles about half an inch long, dark brown with a orange/brown head. Underneath you will see a light blue/white section of the backside, which is what lights up at night. They are flying bugs too, but not to active during the day. Deffinitely want to watch for any bugs like this, as they are deadly poison to bearded dragons and most other reptiles.
