Here are a couple pics of my MO locale eastern yellow belly racer per your request...

He was pretty beat up when I got him, probably would have died. But he has bounced back and become one of my favorites in my collection! Definitely much more alert than any of my other snakes.

And another shot of him...

Enjoy!!

Very cool snake. I really like the racers and coachwhips. I recently saw a pic, somewhere on this site, of a coachwhip in a tree with a rabbit hanging out of its mouth. I don't know how that happened.

Insofar as your racer, how'd it get injured?

The racers and coachwhips are some awesome snakes. They are sight hunters and have the best eyesight of the snakes in NA. Very alert to their surroundings and always trying to get a better view of everything around them. Cool snakes, I think if they werent so high strung, they would be a more collectible snake! But most are not good for collections, as they tend to bite and are very quick to exploit any kind of exit!! LOL

He was found in brumation. He had slight onset of mouthrot, a RI, and multiple lacerations!! I am originally from MO where he was found, and in that part of the state we have alot of hawks and Bald Eagles. (of which are making a great comeback).

He had a bad wound on his neck and back and a very deep cut to his belly. I suspect he almost became lunch for a raptor, and barely escaped. He was probably trying to soak up some of those last rays of fall sunshine prior to going into hibernation, and got snagged up. His wounds were pretty infected and nasty looking, and he probably would have died the following summer.

So I took him to a vet, got him on meds, cranked up his heat and crossed my fingers. He healed up nicely and most of his injuries are not easily seen. His head has some slight deformation from the mouth rot, but seems to get better with every shed. His wounds to his neck and back are completely healed, and the neck wound has some scarring. His belly is still heavily scarred, and probably will be there for the rest of his life, as it was a pretty nasty cut. He feeds fine, although I have to feed him smaller than usual prey items due to his neck scarring. His skin doesnt have the stretchabillity due to the scar.

Other than that, he is a great pet, has never once bitten, and feeds like a champ!!!

Nice save Brian! That's quite a story. Please keep us posted on its progress.

Beautiful snake, but the most remarkable thing about the photo is the absence of blood on your hand!

Excellent work!

Thanks for the nice words!! He is a great addition to my collection, and wish I could come across more racers that are pretty mellow!
