Snake Metabolsim?

tyler1055 Apr 25, 2005 09:11 PM

I have a normal 6-month old female that is very active and eats like a garbage disposal. The reason I'm posting this is because she eats no matter what so I'm curious if it's possible that she has a metabolism thats higher enough then my other snakes that I would have to feed her larger then my other snakes. She seems to be growing at a normal rate, I'll try to get pics up later but I was just curious if anything like this has ever happened to anyone.

....endocrinology (study of hormones) in herps is still relatively poorly understood COMPARED to mammals, but snakes do have thyroids and it's possible to be hyper- or hypo-thyroid, the gland chiefly involved with metabolic RATE....

that being said, I think you have what's known as a "good doer" (that's "good do-ER), an animal that does well and thrives...run with it!

I have 5 baby girls, all about that same age. I've only had them 4 weeks, and so far, 2 will eat every two weeks, 2 will eat every week, and 1 will eat twice a week. They are all set up in the same rack system with same heat and humidity conditions. What does that tell you, well I don't know exactally, some just seem to be better feeders than others.
Good luck with her!
