GRANITE BALL PYTHONS

JaredHorenstein Apr 25, 2005 09:50 PM

I have seen a bunch of so called " granite balls " being advertised already in the classifieds.....

Folks....c'mon now........anyone can post pics of a normal ball with 1 black fleck and call it a granite.....

Some of these folks need to get a life.....

Here are a couple I am working on.....

Maybe I'll see ebonies in 2006?

...peel their heads out and show pics...please

I agree but not enough people have shown good pics of granites in the forum so there's a bit of ignorance going around...

...these should produce some sweet ebonies!

Nice, Ball but I wouldn't consider it a granite. I love the blushing up the sides but I am not to sure that I would call it a granite, It does have a few fleckings but I usually like to see alot of flecking. Oh yea, Hey Charlie thanks for the purchase of that pastel male and I will get you a photo. Thanks DAVID

I'm amazed at the ads myself. I recently saw an ad for a proven female YB. The female was on '04. I'd like to see how that bred and became proven.

At any rate, there are other characteristics of a Granite, what are they?

From what I have noticed over the last 12 years when collecting granites is that most all of them do have the crazy granity/spotted pattern all over their bodies.....not just a couple flecks here and there..........They also have a different coloration to them.........some are a deep orange/brown.....some seem to have reddish hues.......but they are just brighter than normal.........now some also have a gold stripe down their backs......but not all of them.....

A true granite does however have one to multiple black spots right behind the head..... look at the pic for an example.

Now just beacuse your snake has a spot behind its head does not make it a granite unless it has all the other characteristics.....and I am not saying that everyone with a snake that appears to be a granite because it has all this stuff will prove out to be genetic.....

here are a couple other pics of the 2 girls........

they are both very stubborn so I will try to you all some good head shots later today.....

OK...so do I have a granite? She definately has the "speckled" look. It's hard to get a good pic that shows it well but many of the specks are so small and abundant that there are 3,4, or 5 on a single scale! She does have a MUCH brighter appearance than just about every other normal I've seen. In fact, since I know next to nothing about genetics and morphs, it was this bright coloration that drew me to her...she was just prettier than any of the others. As for a yellow stripe on her back, she has one but only on the last 25% or so of her body. I can't see your pics so I'm not sure what exactly you mean by "spots directly behind the head" but she has spots all over her.

Is the only way to truly tell to breed her and prove her out?

None of this really matters a great deal to me since I'm not a breeder and I bought her as a pet and she's been a great one! She actually seems to enjoy human contact and is the first snake I've ever seen that isn't just NOT head shy...but will push her head against your finger until you pet her on the head! She also enjoys having her chin rubbed Any chance she's part dog??? LOL

Jared - You would know much more than I would, but some of the breeders I talked about with about mine said (in additon to what you said) that their true granites generally had white bellies, lighter eyes, lighter heads and felt more pebbley than a normal ball similar to an Angolan (oops another shameless plug for my new guy, LOL). Anyway heres my Fred - I've been on the fence about whether he was "True" or not he fits the criteria, but I'll have to breed him and find out.
