Hog Island Boas on MTV....

Amanda_Burke Apr 25, 2005 10:33 PM

Hi guys,
My boyfriend was watching that new show (Trippin') that Cameron Diaz has on MTV tonight and called me into the living room to watch because they were looking for "Pink" Boas. It turns out they were in Cayos Cuchinos, Honduras and found 3 (I think that's what one of the guys on the show said) Hog Island Boas. On the show, Cameron and her celebrity friends go to a bunch of different places all over the world to learn about conservation and protecting the environment to try to raise awareness with people in the US. I only saw part of it, but they were talking about how these boas only exist on Cayos Cuchinos and Cameron held one. I give her credit for focusing a part of the show on boas, since they often get left out in favor of animals that are soft and cuddly. They did drop one on the ground when it started hissing and striking, though. Oh well, can't ask for too much, I guess. But it was interesting to see because they looked very different from the Hog's we see in collections here!
Anyway, I have to go back to writing the paper that I have due tomorrow. I only have 3 lines so far, so it's gonna be a long night! lol

Good to see celebrities promoting conservation of the "forgotten" species, reptiles. Especially Hog Isles

Well after reading Amanda's post I waited up to watch being on the West Coast. Anyhow finally during the third segment of the idiotic show they got to the pink boa. The celebs were more worried about and I quote “it falling out of a tree wrapping around them and constricting them to death.” “Is it poisonous?” Does it bite?” Whheeewww guess that is what's to be expected when ignorant MTV and animals mix. Kid Rock and Hogg island boas, ohhh yeah!

So finally they catch a Hogg island boa, or they place it conveniently by the hut that they are staying in and they show about three shots of what looks like the ugliest little male I've ever seen that had either just eaten something or had the worst RI in the world? Had a super swollen gullet. Horrible camera shots with no close ups, I was disappointed in not getting to see more of the animal and then they drop the snake after it starts hissing because they are passing it around like a toy. Funny to watch but not worth the wait!

Sorry for the rant,
Justin

Wow, you're pessimistic!! lol! I only saw a minute of the segment, so I guess I missed alot of not-so-good stuff (like the worrying about it falling out of the tree and biting them part!). I just thought that while they obviously could have done a better job, it was still a positive thing that they focused on the fact that those boas only exist there, so habitat destruction (or whatever they were talking about) would have a hugely negative impact on them. Most of the time no one cares about boas, so keeping in mind that these people obviously aren't experts, I just thought it was good that they attempted to draw attention to their plight as best they could.
