dipping in?

My RES keeps dipping his head into the water when hes basking..whats happening with that?

He could be drinking, or just cooling off his head. It is a perfectly normal thing for them to do.

I have two theories on this:

1) Dipping his head in to cool off and/or take a drink. I'm sure it gets warm on the basking dock and he might just be trying to cool off without getting all the way in. (Kind of like people do when they are in a hot tub and don't want to get all the way out.)

or

2) My shy RES will usually dip his head into the water if he's basking when I walk in the room. I think he does it to just to kind of see if I am going to come up to him or not. If I get too close, he goes all the way in. If I stay away, he takes his head back out and goes on basking.

He's just being curious He's just looking under the water, probably for food, nothing to worry about
