for (2) croc monitors:

"recommend you 2 enclosure 6X6 side by side with a trap to make a 6X12 when you(they) will be ready for breeding but if you are very confine with space you could put them in a 4X6 for a while."

Looks as if he had reccomended a 6x6 is a good size but a 4x6 is ok for a while.

then I would not suggest getting a croc monitor. A baby croc might fit into a baby croc setup, or a sub adult might fit into a sub adult setup. But please realize they are going to grow. Once they outgrow the setup they should be moved into a new setup. When they grow you need to be ready to move them into a new cage that fits them. If you can only do that size cage then I would not get a croc monitor as it will outgrow it.

Unless of course your plans are to keep it unhealthy and not let it continue to grow normaly. Have it for a short time and then let it die off. Then maybe the cage will work. Kinda sad way to look at things though, but hey it's something that is done no matter how wrong it is.

Of course 6x6 is reccomended by the top breeder of croc monitors. A 4x6 is also reccomended by him if space is an issue.

Why does a leading breeder of Croc monitors reccomend a minimum of 4x6 and standard size a 6x6. Wouldnt it be best to advise this guy to incease the depth by 3 feet to make it 6x6x6 as reccomended by top Croc Breeders?

Why not post from experience rather then post about someone else's?

I replied with experience (my own) when getting a croc monitor and you can only go that size of cage it is simple do not get one. If he would of said he can do this cage for now and start building a bigger one or can build one later then thats fine.

After all my monitors do not just go into 1 cage for life. They are moved as they grow.

But once you have to put a limit on the cage size, then you should atleast get something that can fit within those limits.

Good luck to you sir and hope one day you can knock off the chip on your shoulder.

That's exacly what i mean by 4X6 for a while. When i said a while, i tought everybody was able to understand the fact that they will not pass the rest of their life in this cage. Now this while is almost over. I will post pics in a couple of month of my new instalation for interested people. Maby some kids will be embarassed. Bu the way, congrat for your baby nile!

others may not have.

To me it is a very simple concept.

varanusanus Apr 26, 2005 12:15 PM

So why dont you advise the above person to increase his cage size about 2 more feet deep and he will be fine?

He will have the same size enclosure the experienced breeders reccomended to you?

or do you reccomend a larger size that what was reccomended to you?

I reccomend for a 4 footer a 4x8(temp, you can add another 4x8 to it later) or 8x8(more permanent) as it will never have to be upgraded.

Why don't you just grow up and come back later?

Please understand, I am a mean guy, but I do not think I am being mean, maybe its you being mean.

Your new croc monitor is a guest, so, why not give the croc monitor your room, you can sleep in the den, or in a drawer in the den(saw that on Seinfield, so it must happen). After all, the croc monitor only gets your room for its whole life, and you can leave your den or better yet, drawer in your den, to do anything you want to do.

Please consider, the croc monitor will soon if not already, be longer then you are tall. It can also walk farther and climb better then you. When healthy they are faster then you too. But I guess if its sick and does not do these things, you can petend the cage or room is a hospital room. You know, like the one you would use when your really sick.

Again I know its me thats mean and rude, but really, show some hospitality and offer your guest your room, if not, maybe its you thats mean and rude. FR

ps, consider, this is suppose to be humorous, if it makes you mad, then maybe the shoe fits, and if the shoe fits, you should be mad, just not at me.

You think too much Frank. hahaha
This is what I tell people that want a large monitor but don't have the room for a large cage.
Go live in your smallest closet for a week. Lay down in it and turn completely around as fast as you can.
This is how your lizard will be living. If it's not enough room for you, how can it be for the lizard?
But then again, I love crocs but you won't be seeing one at my house. You folks are nuts.

Six foot tall is way to small for a Croc. Especially a properly fed Croc. Male Crocs can reach lenghts in excess of eight foot. In their first year of life they have been recorded to reach six foot long, especially males.
Seeing as how your monitor is already 4.5' an 8' tall cage is what it should be put right into. Salvadorii are tree monitors and love to climb. Start with an eight foot tall cage. If you are unable to provide that large of a cage now then you shouldn't buy the monitor.
But this is just my opinion.
