New U. Sikorae owner

BKnOscar Apr 26, 2005 09:28 AM

i know.. another newb jumping on the bandwagon.. lol.. but i'm not. i'm new to uroplatus and have become more interested in them since the CITES reclassification, but not for the typical reasons. i had seen them around before, but it was because of the attention brought to them that i really started looking at them.. and i realized that i love the look of most of the ssp. after talking to some more knowledgeble people at a different board, they helped me narrow it down to the sikorae. at the white plains show this past weekend, i bought myself a 1.1 pair.

here's my male

the females pics arent so hot so i'll try and get some better ones.

now some questions:
- they seem a little dehydrated so i've been spraying them 2x day. i've read about putting them in the shower? is that as literal as it sounds?
- what size are they as mature adults? the dealer wasnt sure how old they were. what weight?
- if old enough, should i let them settle before introducing them to each other?

No reason, in my opinion, that you shouldn't introduce them to each other now.

Literally, in the shower with tepid water and a few plants. It works wonders.

ok, regarding the shower:

- dont they just run off?
- how long?
- it isnt too strong? its gonna knock them off their perches or whatever? in the direct spray, right?

thanks
Scott

a 58 qt. tub with holes drilled ( or preferrably melted with a soldering iron) in the sides and bottom. then i take the top and cut a large rectangle out of the middle. then i use " liquid nails" to hold the fiberglass screen on. let me know if you need screen, i'll give you the size you'll need for cost of shipping.
if you have an enclosed shower you will be fine, but i was having issues with searching for my geckos all over the shower curtain and walls sometimes. then throw a bunch of fake vines or plants in, and a few small pieces of bamboo or dried zebra grass.

i have a shower head that has 5 settings. one of them is an extremely fine mist which is great. it was 15 or 20 bucks at target i believe.

would be helpful if you knew which one you bought at Target.

pollenex is the brand, it's just some cheap brand that we got from wal-mart or target. can't remember which one. the mist setting is pretty nice though, especially for this!

I would shower them everyday until they seem hydrated plus the spraying their tank 2 or 3 times a day.
I have a big sink so i put a plant in there and keep misting them. I would leave them together to. and they're not that big as adults.

The key to them not running off is to have the water on when you put them in, and dont put the spray directly on them. If you have enough cover, 99% of the time, they will not run off, although I have a male lineatus that runs off EVERY SINGLE TIME, so I just put him back on the plant after 5 mins, and he stays there. I found him hanging by his toes, classic position, from the molding on the ceiling the other day.. hilarious.. I will post some pics of that sometime.

Yes, it does seem a little strang. Having been on the chameleon side of the wall for the last 10 years, this is absolutely 100% necessary for them to acclimate, so it got adapted, and works like a charm for Uroplatus(I'm not claiming credit for the idea though..) particularly lineatus and fimbriatus, but every other species as well.

thanks much Eve. i read this forum alot last week before i went to show, knowing that i was going to be looking closely at Uros in general. i read so much from so many regulars, i feel like i know you guys already. lol. i have seen that, compared to many arenas on KS, you guys are a bunch of caring, mature people... mostly i think part of that though is the size of the regulars that show up.. so dont be too eager to see it grow too quickly.

BTW.. i did post a pic!! it in my first post!

Geesh, sorry about that, Guess I though your Mossy was so gorgeous I wanted MORE, LOL

Probably my favorite after my guys (henks) of course,
