South American Many-Lined Garter?

jmurf Apr 26, 2005 02:19 PM

The snake pictured was sold to a friend of mine as a "South American Many-Lined Garter". I have been unable to come up with a positive ID. I'm leaning towards Liophis lineatus, but I really just don't know. Through careless handling, it was able to "chew" on a finger which resulted in localized swelling-swelling subsided the next day. Several food items have been tried, but it has shown no interest in any of them. Care info would be much appreciated. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

That is the central american snake Conophis lineatus (called a Road Guarder in some countries).

It is one of the few New World rear-fanged colubrids shown to be able to cause significant envenomations. By significant, I mean causing swelling, pain etc. at the bite site and on the affectected limb. Be careful with this one!

Dead on ID. I have been envenomated by this species and had an interesting 15 minutes while my finger, which had recieved two prolonged bites (I was ignoring the chewing while I looked for a bag to put the two I was holding in)had some local swelling and burned like a bee sting. After 15 minutes all pain and swelling were gone, but I have (11years later) a tiny scar from one of the bites.

Try skinks or anoles, I think in the wild they are lizard feeders, saw one in mexico take a frog as well. good luck.
