This site is starting to irritate me...I've tried four times to post these pics, and its starting to be a pain in the A$$!!!! Multiple pic posts are a disaster.

Anyway,

Here's the first...a schleg.

and a terciopelo, waiting in ambush after the rain....

I don't get it....anyway, I'll keep going, one at a time, since nothing is working right when I preview it.

the terciopelo as it quietly retreated from our photo session.

I've got sharper images, but they rarely hold still, when you're trying to get the defensive threat display.

Yeah that guy really worries me. Some of you more professional photographers in here are going to need to do something awesome on TV so you can get that moron off the air!!!

Hey! I'm no snake enthusiasts, but I know that coral snakes have red, black and yellow bands. Nice picture though. What was the camera/lens/exposure info, ect?

Camera: Nikon D70 DSLR camera.
Lens: Nikkor 18-70mm AF-S (Type G) lens
for the close-up of the Coral head, the camera was on Auto, but the settings were:

ISO:200
Shutter: 1/60
Aperture: F4.5
Focal Length: 70mm

Ig,

Many of the Coral species South of the USA are not red, yellow and black. Some are coloured in triads or just alternating bands. Without grabbing Campbell and Lamar I am unsure of the species.

Sorry about that. I'm definitely not a snake person. I didn't know that there was any other snakes called coral snakes outside the US.

Matt, great shots. Hope you weren't too close to that asper. I hear they are capable of some impressive acrobatics. The eyelash is gorgeous, and I like the face shot of the coral. I really need to get my butt out of the Carolinas once in a while and visit some of these awesome herp spots.

Any problems with your D70 on the trip?

Cheers,
WK

Matt Harris Apr 27, 2005 07:46 AM

None whatsoever. It actually fell off a shelf, and bounced off concrete, was rained on, endured a salt spray while boating across the golfo dulce, was shaken, banged off of rocks while hiking the interior of the peninsula and the worst thing that happened was moisture between the filter and lens.....thats it!!

I will be having it cleaned, but likely after my August trip back to the Osa. If you ever want to join us on a trip, let me know.

Thanks for recommending a great camera!!

WK Apr 27, 2005 09:15 PM

Sounds like you beat the snot out of the camera. Glad to here it held up! Thanks for the offer to make a trip with you guys. I'm sure it would be a blast.

Cheers,
WK

Matt,

Sound like you gave it gave it a fair flogging!!

What lens where you using for the dendrobatids? and It looks like you where using auto focus??

I have gotta get to the states and Coasta Rica...playing with Bothrops instead of my Oxyuranus would be a learning curve!

Do you happen to know when the leathery turtles nest?

Regards,
Scott

Matt Harris Apr 27, 2005 07:55 AM

unless you start provoking them, they rarely strike. We caught 2 or 3, and they tend to run, but only smaller ones seem to strike IF you try to pin them or restrain them. I keep about 6 of them here in the states(with a possibly gravid female at the moment).

Cheers.

Matt

Matt,

First off good pics.

I have had the D70 since January and have found that going to the "A" setting (Apeture priority auto) and setting f16 and using a more powerful flash (currently an old sb 24) has yield me with good results....After each shot I check the histogram (Take a photo and press right when the image comes up) so that the peak is in the middle and thus correctly exposing the the shot.

Regards,

Scott
ps what sp of coral is in the last pic?

Matt Harris Apr 27, 2005 07:47 AM

Thanks. I may try that. I was just using the built in Flash.

That is Micrurus nigrocinctus.
