Skin Issues!?

lizgirl17 Apr 26, 2005 08:33 PM

Hi I'm new to sliders and I need some help. I don't own one but I work at a pet store and we just got some in. They came in with red patchy skin on their necks and legs. It kind of looks like a rash. I haven't been able to find much info in the books I've red. We do have an appointment with a vet that is experienced in reptiles, but the soonest was next week and I wanna help these two girls as soon as I can. I tried to take a pic but it doesn't show up on the camera through the water and every time I take them out they hide in their shell. Has anybody seen this and if so would a sulph dip help to get rid of it? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help!

Without being seen by a vet I think the best thing is to make sure the water is clean, clean, clean and that they have a UVB light and good quality food. Is there any way to take them outside for real sun? When I worked at a pet store and we got some tortoises in by accident once (they were not sold at my store) I would take one or two of them outside whileI was on break.

Thanks for the reply. We are trying to keep the water clean as possible. I already have the staff doing water changes everyday. We are feeding them Wardley turtle pellets, crickets, worms and veggies and a little anachris to munch on. It's against our policy to feed live fish, but I've heard it makes the water dirtier anyway. Also we supplement the live foods with vit/Ca powder. They have a basking light and two basking spots, Full UV lighting, and a powerfilter in about five or six inches of water. We are going to keep a real close eye on these girls until we can get them checked out by a vet, and in the mean time I won't let any one sell them! I'll try to get them out side for a little bit, but I don't know if my boss will go for it. Thanks agian!

Sounds like a real awesome pet store! The other response was right on the money

Red blotches, that could be a sign of blood poisoning. Go here about half way down there a pic of a snapper with blood poisoning. http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/medinjuries.htm
