Source for plastic cage tracks?

Lgbrooksi Apr 26, 2005 09:12 PM

I sent a couple of private messages out with this information request but thought others on this forum might like the input, as well, so I figured I would go ahead and post it here.

What are some good sources for the plastic tracks that hold the glass in place? (I plan to use either 1/4" or 3/8" glass)

I currently have a couple of Vision cages and my only "issue" with their plastic tracks (and corresponding glass size) is that there is a little too much room between the two panes of glass. I found this out "the hard way" when I arrived home one day to find my recently acquired kingsnake hatchling stretched out along the OUTSIDE track! (he had gotten out between the panes at the center). Luckily I found him before he ventured any further (I had a thin strip of glass cut and siliconed it vertically along the center edge of one of the glass pieces which filled the void there).

So, if there is a track type that allows the glass pieces to be as snug/close as possible, that would be my choice (I also have partitions in this current cage so I would like as little gap along the back/cage side of the track, as well, so the glass stays close to the partition edge/wall).

Thanks...

Tim,

Are you saying your are going to remove the stock glass track from your Vision and install your own track?

Are you keeping a hatchling kingsnake in a Vision? I think if so you should just keep the snake in a smaller, tighter enclosure until it's big enough for the Vision. A hatchling kingsnake is likely to escape from any track, not just Visions.

Regardless, here is the Outwater link I'd said I'd dig up in e-mail:

Chris,

Thanks for the specific link to those glass tracks.

No -- I'm not removing the tracks from my Vision cage (the tracks I'm seeking are for a new, custom-built cage with removable partitions).

Also, that "hatchling" kingsnake is now about 2 1/2 years old and almost 4 feet in length so sqeezing between the glass panes is no longer an issue! (good point though re: hatchling snakes in Vision cages -- I was lucky not to have lost my little guy via that escape route!)

So is this custom cage for hatchling snakes? I still believe the security concerns of sliding glass doors are fairly trivial unless you're housing a live-bearing species in the cage or possibly if prey items escaping is a concern.

What is this cage for?

Regardless, one thing to consider is that most 1/4" glass sold is actually 3/16". So if your custom enclosure has track for 1/4" glass you can generally expect for the glass to fit a bit "loose" and you'll have gap concerns at both the junction of the glass and between the glass and your dividers.

Just a guess, but 1/8" glass might actually be more secure, since it's actually 1/8".

Don't know about 3/8".

i often wonder if a thin piece or foam rubber weatherstripping could be installed in between the two panes of glass. maybe stick it to the back piece and when you slide the glass it would not be tight enough to hinder movement but it could close that gap. then when the little critter grows up just remove it and scrape off whatever adhesive is left behind

Try www.rockler.com they have plastic, and hardwood tracks for 1/4 inch glass or if you have a router you can make your own! I router 2x2's with 1/4 inch bit and you can control how much space their is between the two pieces.
