Business Trends & Proven Males

CJBianco Apr 26, 2005 09:22 PM

I've noticed several (most) advertisements for breeder males lately. Wouldn't it be wiser to keep any proven animals? Is this commonplace? Impatience for return on investment? Some other reason?

I plan on keeping my Albino male (hopefully) forever...and it just seems to make more business sense to keep the little guy long after he produces his first clutch.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

I agree with you CJ I dont understand why anyone would get rid of a proven breeder especially any morphs. With all the designer morphs there is always a project for any morph males. JMHO

Probably upgrading male genetics or just getting new bloodlines. The combos might be the reason. Maybe they are replacing a plain albino male with a double gene male to try for snow in the next generation or something like that. I know I'm thinking of getting rid of possible het males and upgrading to unrelated for sure hets to hedge my bet if the possible hets missed.

Thats a good point. But alot of the proven males for sale are dom/co dom. So if they have breed then in theory you could use one of there babies the following year. Or they might of kept a stunning male from the year before that will go the following year. I know I have a proven yellow belly thats about to hit the market for one of those reasons.

I was mainly talking about co-doms. It seems that many people are breeding their Pastel (Spider, Mojave, etc) to a bazillion Normal females, and once they see a few ovulations...it's time to sell the breeder male.

At first I thought these people were just impatient for a return on investment, but then I thought...hey, maybe there's some other business strategy to this. Who knows?

One of my theories is that they want to get their money back before the price plummets. They could probably sell a 'proven breeder male' for as much or more then they originally paid for the hatchling. (taking into consideration the already steep price drop on some dominant morphs like the spiders) That way they're not left holding the bag in case the bottom drops out.

Now, I'm not saying thats going to happen, but there seems to be a number of people in this hobby prone to that kind of panic driven pricing.

Like I said, it's just a theory.

There might be a few reasons that people might sell proven breeders off the top of my head I can think of:

- got more than they need (maybe a bunch of holdbacks that proved out and are ready to move).
- moving in a different direction
- need the money to fund something else or just plain need the $$$
- want to get new blood into their projects
- not really proven just scamming (LOL)

Theres probably more ...
