Snake Guy with newbie question on BTS breeding

LordDreyfus Apr 26, 2005 11:45 PM

Ok, here is the story. I got a pair of BTS on trade a couple months ago and low and behold its a pair. Never thought that would happen. I saw them mating a while back and now the smaller one looks like she swallowed a balloon. How long does pregnancy last and what special precautions should I take? Sorry for the newbie question...I'm a snake guy and save most of my research time for them.

Hello Travis,
Do you know what kind of BTS you have? Have you taken pictures so we can help identify them for you? Maybe the seller told you which kind?

Anyhow, the gestation can be from 4 months to 8 months - depending upon the individual skink and a lot of variables. One of our northern females gave birth today and she was bred in December.

The female should be in her own enclosure, and you might want to remove the substrate and give her old (clean) towels or sweatshirts to have her babies on. She should have nutritious meals as she is feeding her family-to-be.

For more information and video clips of the live births, you can visit bluetongueskinks.net
There are forums to post for help in too.

For the best possible detailed/compiled information on Husbandry, Breeding, and Biology buy the book: "Blue-Tongued Skinks Contributions to Tiliqua and Cyclodomorphus" Edited by Hitz,Shea,Hauschild, Henle & Werning. This is a great collection of past and present research that will answer every question except for that which your Vet may need to in health issues.
