Well, my third clutch of the year came sometime between Monday night and Tuesday night...7 obviously fertile eggs and one with an unusual appearance when candled. All 8 seemed to look nice and healthy from the outside. As I candled each egg in the egg mass, I came across one with the sickly yellow glow of an infertile egg. I carefully removed it from the others, set it aside and got the 7 good eggs in the incubator.
I then examined the weird egg more closely. What I found is that although the entire top 2/3 of the egg glows yellow, the very bottom of the egg does in fact have veins and a nice pinkish glow. Anybody ever seen this before?
MY hypothesis is that I actually have two ova shelled together, one being fertile and one not...A near miss at twins, if you will.
My questions are this...1) Has anyone seen this before? 2) What do you think about my hypothesis? and 3) If I do have an unfertilzed egg in the same shell with the good one, how likely am I to kepp the good one alive until hatching?
Thanks for any input....it will be interesting to see how this turns out.
P.S. - for anyone who may have tried to e-mail me the past few days...I'm in the middle of a move right now. The computer is still at the old place, and the phone line there has been disconnected. I should have the computer to the new place by the weekend, and I'll catch up with you then! Thanks!
Joe
