MORE CROC SHOTS

Here are some pics of some truely awesome monitors.
The smaller one is most likely a male judging tongue color and lower jaw features, but I'ld like to hear you opinions.
Thanks,
-Omar

just wondering cause you said aggressive. By the appearance looks to be an imported wild croc. Dark body color with orange tinge. Also the very dark wild eyes.

Here is one of my c/b for comparison

Those pictures don't show me enough to base an opinion on. I also wouldn't go by tongue color to sex an animal.

Interesting story, the small one, is actually the ltc one, and the bigger one(which is amazing) came in FRESH import. The reason for the rough look, it came in real young, and the owner stressed the hell out of it. He got it to the point where at the site of a human it thrashes so bad it severly cut it's arms, tail, and even part of the head. After getting it, I rehydrated it and it's on a slow but good track. It now does not thrash, but in return has grown accustam to biting, and being aggressive, I do not want to even try handling it till it fully recovers and is on a steady track, but the way that's going it will take quite some time. So it really does not bother me if it stays aggressive or tame, regardless of temperment, I'ld be thrilled just to have it survive. I'm sure I can calmn him down a whole lot, but for the next few months, alone time would do him best (my opinion)
but thanks for your opinion.
Good luck with the captive breeding, I remember you introduced a cb male(I believe) into your project, how did that turn out? Any aggression? Well good luck, if anything pops up croc monitor wise be sure to post about it(which I'm sure u will!)

both have the same wild look to them. Check out most of the crocs on KS for sale. You'll note the same appearance as yours. Dark eyes slender elongated body structure, and the orange tinge.

I have not seen this look with any captive born crocs. Sorta strange but kinda interesting to me.

Again sorry I couldnt help with sexing yours. But I see no sexual characeteristics in the picture that would lean me in either direction. Perhaps it is just the picture or your animal is not yet showing maturity.

Yeah, the bigger one, it(btw is not mine, I just work with it) is fat bodied and nice, and the smaller one does look full on import, I almost went for a captive born croc monitor, but I thought about it, and at a realistic point of veiw, I doubt I can provide what is needed for full breeding success(not to mention long incubation) so Instead of paying a lot for one that at most would be a nice tractible monitor, I just got this guy in hopes of turning his life to the better, he was almost dead at one point, and I'm happy he got where he's at now, I'll keep at him(picky feeder btw) and hopfully in a few months he will be in ideal or close to ideal conditions aside from the scars. I might, try to calm him down, but I'm still uncertain about that, if he improves I will work with him, but if he doesn't follow a steady path I'ld much rather try to keep him going than tame, just my opinion tho.
Anyway thanks,
btw, do you know any importers of the Jayapura croc monitors? I know you get the occasional Meraukees on KS, but I'm yet to see any Jayas, I don't think I'ld get one(not right now atleast), but I was just curious as to price range for them.
Thanks

Import cost from 200-450 depending on volume, availability and location

JPsShadow Apr 28, 2005 11:24 AM

What I see on KS is sorongs, with the occasional jaya and very few merauke.

While it is nice you purchased this one to keep it alive, please remember it also helps them bring in more. If they think the demand is still there they will keep up with the supply. I know it is a hard thing to do and easier said. I have done the same in the past. Just keep it in mind.

As far as your little one it's age is up in the air. being wild caught if it had a great year and food supply was high it could be young, if its time in the wild was rough it could be older.

In captivity they have been seen to reach 4 foot in under a years time, and some hit 6 foot in a year.

Thats the thing with monitors if kept in poor conditions they will not thrive and flourish, if kept in good or better conditions they will. Makes judging age by size not applicable.

What I see in your picture is a wild caught croc that is immature. Until it starts to mature you will not see secondary charecterisitcs.

I didn't buy this from an importer, and it came in good shape, I bought this from someone who neglected it. I would not buy him from an importer if it were in this shape, but seeing it in person made me feel bad,,, so....
But anyways, if you ever find a jayapura(and a nice one) lemme know my email is Omar@comcast.net
I know imports cost around that, but I have not seen a jayapura as of now. There are have been two or three Meraukees on KS in the past months, Ben had one, and then some guy had I think a 6-7ft one and one was a baby I believe. I don't really like those that much tho. thanks for the info tho.

cant see your 6 footers head, it would be just guesses though

BMX_PYTHON Apr 27, 2005 06:45 PM

Well (he) has a yellow tongue, and lower jaw structure of a male, but yeah I'm always open to opinions, thanks

varanusanus Apr 27, 2005 10:27 PM

4.5 is a young croc, 2 years maybe. Ive found my males have deeper taller heads(more bullish), yours looks rather thin, it is only a guess though, never noticed anything regarding the toung
