Humidity Levels

CJBianco Apr 27, 2005 01:00 PM

I just received my new Big Apple dual-probe theromometer/hygrometer today and have decided to test the humidity in my rack system. I've never really questioned it before since all of my animals have perfect sexy sheds. However...

The humidity level is reading a bit low, and I was wondering...

How many vent holes (1/4" diameter soldering iron) do you prefer in a standard Rubbermaid 2221 (22 1/4"x16 1/4"x5 3/4" plastic tub?

Odd question, huh? I was just wondering if anyone has a preferred amount...

Thanks,
Chris

What the hell is a sexy shed???? LOL

I've got 1/4 inch holes 3 inches apart down the sides, I'm using CB-70s with lids so I also poke a few holes in the lid. I was told to do more but these seem to work great I've got perfects temps and humidity and sexy sheds too apparently.

*wink* Sexy sheds...

Maybe the hygrometer is way off. The most it reads is 38% but there is no way that my humidity is that low. Sheds always come off in perfect small donuts. And I can readily tell if an animal had a stool, because I always see condensation inside the tub...so the humidity has to be pretty high to start in order to get condensation. Right?

Of course, I did just refill all the water bowls. Maybe the water hasn't heated enough to start evaporating into humidity. Hmm...

I don't understand. The humidity levels are ranging from 39% - 44% only. The water dish is large and placed closer to the heat source. Many of the extra vent holes are taped closed. Maybe the levels are correct.

But how would 40% humidity account for perfect sheds and condensation inside the tub when a stool is present? Hmm...

Maybe I should continue with the Mike Wilbanks method. No hygrometers. If the animals shed fine...the humidity is fine. No worries.

Hmmmm, ya think? Chris, sometimes to much emphasis is put on trying to " get it right." If the sheds are good and whole (sexy) then I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Just monitor things. If you notice a change then take the proper actions to correct it.

I agree. The humidity is probably fine. I just hate to think that my new Big Apple dual-probe digital thermometer/hygrometer is junk. It looks cool and has a very long and descriptive name. That equals quality...right? =)

Well yeah, you would think so. Is there some other way of checkin' it? Maybe you should just get a replacement, if it's bad they should fix it or replace it. I'd hate to spend the money and find out it's a bad unit too.

Catch 22: The only way to compare accuracy is to purchase a second unit.

DUHHH!!! Musta been a brain fart :|. Return it and get a new one.

Quig

I really shouldn't return the product without proof of defect. And the thermometer is pretty accurate. Who knows?

On a side note: I removed the tape from some vent holes, which results in higher ventilation. This should lower humidity. The humidity is now a little higher at 45% steady. Gosh...this is giving me a headache. =/

LOL, OK just play with it till you get it figured out.

Chris - I don't have the big apple one but the one I have the humidity is detected through the unit itself not through the probes (only the heat levels are detected through the probes) so my question is do you have the unit inside your tubs? or just the probes? Could this be the problem? Just a thought. Maybe you could buy one of those cheap digital hygrometers and place them side by side and see whats reads truest. Just some thoughts too early in the morning. Still love that sexy shed thing - my albino shed out last night - very sexy!

Good idea. This particular unti is designed to read humidity via the probe. The unit itself it kept outside of the enclosure. The probe is taped inside against the back wall. The humidity reads a sudden drop if I open the enclosure, so I'm fairly certain the probe is functional. However...placing the entire unit inside the tub wouldn't hurt anything.

I'll give it a try...

Oh! And ya gotta love those sexy sheds! =)
