radiated rat snake

kkierstead Apr 27, 2005 01:43 PM

Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone could help me? I went to a local expo show where I bought a hatchling radiated rat snake. I'm ashamed to admit that I really don't know much about them ( how big will they get, substrate, heating, humidity) I searched the web and found a few sights, but they alll say different things.

Well, radiated are awesome snakes! Maybe not the best impulse by snake, but very intelligent active snakes. They can get up to around 5'long and calm down a quite a bit as they get older. I don't keep mine overly humid, but maybe a bit more than normal, especially if you live in an area that tends to be dryer. They'll eat about as much as you want to feed them also! If you have any other questions, fire away!

What about temp? The guy that sold her to me said I could keep her in the same tank as my corn. I run him around 80 and humidity around 45%. I was told that they can be a bit to handle while young. I like that chalenge. I also own two ball pythons. My female is a sweetheart, but my male will try to bite you every chance he gets. I thnk he's my favorite.

Hi I kept a radiated for 3 years. I got him as a hatchling. He was one of my favorite snakes and I am sorry I traded him for some expensive Garter snake morphs. However I do not racomend keeping him with a corn. Radiateds are easily stressed. They are more like a racer rather than a rat snake,as with most Asian rat snakes. Mine never even constricted. It is really not a good idea to house snakes together incase of parasites or sickness. They do need a fairly large enclosure when they get bigger I kept my almost 5 foot one in a 75 gallon tank. He climbed a lot and was very acitve. In my opinion they do not calm down all that much. But they are a spectacular snake just have patients. Any thing else feel free to ask.

I keep mine at around 80*F, maybe 45-50% humidity. Agressive feeders that will through there entire body around baby rat/jumbo mouse in a heartbeat. Active, but not at all unhandleable. I've had my t- amel. and het. t- females for 3 years now, and they have calmed down a TON, as they never even try to strike anymore, unless I intentionally provoke them.
