what is your dragon's preferred way to drink?

lele Apr 27, 2005 04:19 PM

Still finding our way around and trying to figure out best mode to offer water. The bowl seems useless (dripped water into it, etc.) but he seems to love to be misted! I am surprised how much considering he is from a rather arid region. He holds his head up as if to say "ahhh!" I have tried a dropper, too. So just wondering what the rest of you do?

beardies get alot of water from the food they eat especially from there greens nad other various types of fruits and vegies. my dragon never drank out of a bowl nor did she drink if i put a dripper in.. what i like to do is put the foucet on very low and let it spout out room temperature water and put the beardie near it if the dragon is thirsty it will drink and if not it will act like nothing is there.. i hope this helps you

he's just over 2 months so I haven't introduced him to sinks or bathing yet. Should I? I had a cat that drank from the faucet and another who would hold her paw under it and then lick her paw. She was polydactyl (extra digits) and had baseball mitts for feet! But I digress...

He eats some greens but mainly crickets and silkies.

thanks!

We use a dropper and put a small drop on the tip of his nose. We also mist him 1-2 times per day and mist his greens too. Although he doesn't seem to eat much of those.

I use the dropper, too. I think I will mist him more often, I was under the impression misting was not as crucial to these guys (I have a cham who is addicted to moisture - lol!) but seeing how much he loves it I will continue.

thanks!

Hey lele! My beardie is doing great I hope yours is. I have so many reptiles every room in my house has one! I found the BEST way is to get a syringe (I use the one from the repti-aid box) and place little drops at the tip of his mouth and let a few drops drip. Usually he doesn't drink then unless he is real thirsty then he eagerly drinks, but what he usually does is run around a bit and then lick his lips. Then I put a few more drops while he is licking his lips and a few drops go in. Try it! Remember to drip, wait then drip again.

Glad he is doing well, Darwin is great - we will need to post photos soon! Each day I keep him out longer and let him explore a bit farther. SO different from chams, huh?!

Funny, I find him to do the same with the dropper - he drinks after I am done. Does your guy LOVE being misted? Mine does!

Actually, all of my dragons drink from bowls. I use the "plates" you put under flower pots as bowls - deep enough to hold water, but shallow enough that they can climb in easily. Plus they are cheap, and they come in a variety of sizes (I use plastic ones) so you can get ones big enough that the dragon can sit in them. I've never had an issue "training" mine to drink from bowls. Of course, I give them baths as well, and I spray hatchlings, but all of my juvies and adults adjust to bowl-drinking well.

Hey, my beardies all have different preferences. One of my beardies hates to be misted, she just runs and hides, while the other two love it. All of my dragons actually have taken very well to drinking out of the spray botle i use. They all get excited and prop their heads up waiting to drink from the water i drip on them. It's so cool that they've come to recognize the bottle and get excited when they see it. All of my beardies drink when i give them baths too.

Yes! That's what Darwin does! Raises himself up and gets all excited! So cute

that she preferred to use it as a toilet.

She'll only drink when she's thirsty, I guess, but when she is she'll drink from a dropper or syringe. The only time she drinks in the bath is right after brumation. This year she shut her eyes, dropped her nose right in and took a good 20-25 gulps before lifting her head. I think next year I may wake her up for a drink and then put her back to sleep. Maybe it'll cut down on the amount of soaking she needed to have her first "post-brumation poop".

Sorry for all the poop references, but hydration and pooping seem to go pretty much hand in hand for my beardie.

lele Apr 28, 2005 04:54 PM

a personal beardie preference. I had heard about poop in the bowl and when he seemed disinterested I figured I'd just can it, but it seems to owkr for some.

Thanks for everyone's response - I love to hear others' experiences with their beardies as Darwin and I create our own!
