Concerns about my baby aligator snapper

oldrippy Apr 27, 2005 04:29 PM

I got an alligator snapper about two months ago. Right now he is in a cement mixing tub i bought a home depot and i filled it to about an inch and a half of water added some rocks filter heat lamps etc. accordingly, but he seems to spend more time outa water than in water. I am not really sure if thats a problem cuz he eats like a pig and goes into the water to eat rosy reds (the only thing he will eat right now) But im just wondering is that normal behavior for a baby alligator snapper being lazy on rocks for most of the time and going in the the water occasionaly and for food only? other than that he seems fine

Has he got algae on his shell, or leeches? Both of those will prompt turtles to get out and sun the heck out of themselves, in order to dry out and kill the freeloaders off. There's only one mention of this in alligator snappers in the literature, but I believe the littler ones will do that if they get too overloaded.

When my turtle was a baby he would frequently go out of the water. I don't know if it is natural. I would suggest getting a tank, about 20 gallon, and making it half water and half gravel (building a slope). That way he can decide where to go and have lots of room to move. They grow fast though and mine got over it when he was about a year old. Now he spends all his time in the water.
