Big Apple Herp Power Proportional Thermostat (whew)

CJBianco Apr 27, 2005 07:30 PM

There don't seem to be many online reviews regarding this product. Is it solid?

Thanks In Advance,
Chris

I've used them for years. They are smoking. I use them on my incubators and get unbelievable consistency. I went away for a 4 day weekend a couple of weeks ago. My thermometer in the incubator has a min and max feature. When I got back, the max for the time period was 88.7. The min for the time period was 88.7. No fluctuation at all even though the ambient air varied quite a bit during that time. I've never tried the Helix, but I really don't have a reason to. Are the helix units cheaper?

From what I've read the Helix units sometimes have a faulty ERROR message, however it is commonly stated that this does not effect performance. Both are digital. The Helix has a digital interace while the Big Apple has an analog dial interface. And the Big Apple has standard night-drop capability. The only advantage that I can see when using a Helix is the ability to monitor current temperatures without using a dedicated secondary thermometer.

Personally, I don't mind using a dedicated secondary thermometer...as long as the Big Apple Herp Power Proportional Thermostat is a solid product.

(Or am I missing something important?)

Thanks,
Chris

PS -- The Helix usually costs more.

Its a good idea to have a secondary thermometer anyway, especially on an incubator. The night drop feature is nice as well, although setting it is a bit sketchy...The minimum drop is five degrees, and then you have to adjust it from there. There is no way to know exactly how much drop you have unless you use a secondary thermometer and watch it for yourself. But still, I have several of them and have had no complaints. The analog dial works fine for me as well.

I agree. I love the Big Apple Thermostat. Although I'd still like to know how it compares to other brands...pound for pound.

The only downfall I see to the BAH units is there is no digital readout(for over 100 bucks you deserve one) and the analog dial with the printed setpoints on the casing...
