Its a U. sikorae sikorae

eastarch Apr 27, 2005 09:52 PM

While hydrating the "unknown Uro" I got a great shot down its throat. It is definitely black. As far as I know the only Uro with a black buccal cavity is the U. s. sikorae. According to Svatek this feature can distingush them from all the others in the "fimbriatus group". Darn, now I have 2 male U.s.sikorae and a female U.s.sameiti. I was hoping to have a pair. Guess I will have to get more.

you're a lil bit wrong there. i know at least phantasticus have black buccal cavities, meaning u. s. sikorae are not the only uro's like that.

Well, they said it not me, but phantasticus aren't in the "fimbriatus group" anyway. They are in the "ebenaui group". They have them divided into four groups, two of which are the larger dorsally flattened group (the fimbriatus types), and the smaller laterally compressed group (the ebenaui types). So they were only comparing the fimbriatus, henkeli, and sikorae in that statement. The other two groups are the lineatus group (they stant alone), and the alluaudi group including: alluaudi, guentheri and malahelo.

i realize all of thise, i just made mention of phantasticus because in your original message you said that as far as you knew, u. s. sikorae were the only uro's with black buccal cavities. just wanted to clarify that.

In the Sikorae complex, there is a relatively decent amount of interbreeding. The are a few zoos that are have bred sikorae sikorae and sikorae sameiti with each other and produced offspring.

I am working with a male s.sikorae and a female s.sameiti.

Do you know what colour mouth these offspring have? Can you tell us which zoos have completed this successful breeding?

thanks!

Oops. sorry. It wasn't obvious from my original post that I only meant the "fimbriatus group".
