Flightless Fruit Fly medium?

ShRivver Jul 11, 2003 07:08 AM

Hi,
I posted a long time ago about what to feed baby toads... go tthe answer and went to a local reptile store to get what I needed... he charged me an arma nd a leg for the medium and the cultures and I really do not want to go back through him for the products. I have enough to make two more cultures (I have two arleady culturing) and I will need some more medium very soon...

It looks like flaked potatoes, but I don't know what it is, since it turns blue when I add the water-- does anyone have a good resource for this medium, or a recipe for it? He had charged me $12 for about a cup of this stuff.... and I REALLY do not want to buy from him again.

Thanks
Shrivver

Apparently you are missing the multitudes of ads on kingsnake for fruit flies and other feeders. You can find anything you need through this website.

Just because there is an ad, doesn't mean that it is a "good" resource for the product. I am looking for more of a recipe to make it myself-- I saw that some people used baby food flakes-- others potato flakes--- So, you see, just looking at an ad without anyone to back the company really isn't what I am looking for by posting this request.

Do you have a specific company you trust and utilize?

Thank you

I didn't realize you were looking to make your own. Try posting on the feeder and dart frog forums.

do a search on these forums, or go to the dart frog forum. I make my own medium. Here's the recipe I use: In a large glass jar, add instant mashed potatos, and 2 TBSP sugar to equal approx. 1 inch, add enough water to moisten, sprinkle with dry, active yeast. Add about 50 flys and cover top with a coffee filter secured with a rubberband.

Hi: Just about everyone on the Dart Frog forum would tell you to trust Eds Flymeat for their cultures and medium and culturing materials. www.edsflymeatinc.com The blue stuff doesn't hold up too well over time. Eds flymeats media lasts and you run into less hassle with mold or escapes and crashes if you just drop the dough and buy all the supplies too. Its not cheap but they have tons of business because its so reliable. On the same forum you will be able to find a multitude of homemade medias with some issues with mold that you will have to do some adjusting to get things right. What some people do is to buy a small size of Eds first to get things going(so there is a sure supply)and experiment with the home made recipes meanwhile to get it right in the long run. Ed also has springtails and the culturing kit, and its a reliable 2nd source of food. I also started Aphids from Berkshire Biological(let you know how that goes once I have some results). Good luck on the toadletts!
