UVB heat lights

emilyisrad Apr 27, 2005 11:13 PM

I was looking for a new light that could provide heat as well as UVB..I was just wondering if anyone likes using these and if they can recommend any.

I was looking at the
SOLAR BRITE UVB MERCURY VAPOR MINI FLOOD 100 WATT
ZOO MED POWER SUN UVB 100 WATT
Capture The Sun Mercury Vapor Bulbs

any suggestions?

I've tried one; I believe it was a T-Rex (?). I did'nt care for it and haven't used a dual purpose light since.

The reason I want a dual light is because my beardie spends almost 90% of his time in and right around his basking light and the UVB light isn't right over him because of the basking light. I'm afraid he's not getting enough UVB exposure. Is he not getting enough UVB since he doesn't sit right under it?

You're right in your thinking. What I do is set the UV and heat/basking light up in the same proximity. Since he spends alot of time under or around the heat source he also experiences a lot of exposure to the UVB source.

3 ZooMed 100W floods in a year, two of them warrantee replacements. The last one didn't last two months. I'm done with them.

I have heard good things about Mega Ray self ballasted bulbs (the kind that put out heat have two elements and are internally ballasted), and even more good things about their externally ballasted bulbs, but they don't put out heat. They DO put out more UVB and at a wide angle and so can cover a lot of area.

I'm eventually going to go with a standard heat lamp right next to a Mega Ray ext. ballasted type lamp. That will provide heat and UVB in the same area.

Mega Rays do put out heat. They are a one bulb solution.

that has an external ballast and puts out very little heat. They're a little more costly to get started, but after the initial purchase are the same as the others to replace, and they have a 1 yr. warrantee.

I just finished ordering one of their SB lights and will see how that works out before I opt for the EB and have to figure out a new heating scheme.

I tried powersun....etc.... none were worth a crap. Then I got a Mega Ray . I will not use anything else. Excellent UVB (several times that of tube bulbs) and gives heat. So I run one bulb for everything. I got the hundred watt one and love it! Also these are not fragle like the other ones.... link below.
