jaw inflammation

chriscj Apr 28, 2005 03:45 PM

ok i had lost a hognose about 6 months ago. 1 week ago she showed up. she was very skiny and she wont eat. when i found her, the left jaw seemed kinda out of place. today it looks quite a bit inflammintated. i think this is why she wont eat. any ideas what it is and how to fix it. my guess was mouth rot or broken jaw, thanks

Mouth rot certainly would be the first consideration. With a prolonged absence and hiding who-knows-where AND without food (good thing hogs are used to it!), a trip to a vet should be mandatory. In the mean time, make sure it gets rehydrated, soak it in warm water.

It needs to go to a reptile qualified Vet. No matter how good a description you may give of the problem, I doubt anyone could diagnose its ailment by just a description. I also doubt any home remedy would heal it. It will probably need an antibiotic.jmo. Also mouth rot is usually indicated by a cheese like substance in the mouth.

To your other snakes...no. But it can and will get worse. Being gone that long and coming back beat down like that you could be brewing all sorts of nasties. I had a black ratsnake go AWOL for 4 months and come back looking OK. Started warming her up and watching her. She started, over the next week, developing swollen jaw, bubbling scales......she had a septis and had weeks of shots to clear it. Even Cornell wasn't sure she was gonna make it. So, I personally would get a vet now and I would watch you baby closely until you have her eating and well.
