a further thought has just struck me.. i know theres a potentially huge gene pool out in the wild, but considering the number of people that keep and breed ball pythons around the world, im suprised that the vast majority of all of these stunning morphs still appear spontaneously in the wild and are brought in as imports - like the paragon and burgandy albino. i cant think of any mutations that have suddenly sprung up in captivity (except perhaps the granite) - particularly with the trade and exchange of ball pythons between breeders and collectors is oriented around those that look the most attractive / interesting. Im not counting things like the black eyed leucy though because the fireballs were different looking to begin with and were selectively bred.
The granite albino for example - another totally stunning wild caught (i believe?) morph that just came from nowhere.. and yet 'granite' ball pythons have been popping up spontaneously in collections for years, im suprised none of the various crosses - granite x pastel etc have not appeared spontaneously yet. I think the first selectively bred granite cross is the granite mojave posted here a while ago?
Although going back to the granite albino its probly got nothing to do with the "standard" granite morph? looks more like an albino burm lol, even in the shape of its head etc.
Thats the power of good old mother nature... i guess we have her to thank for the paragon, burgandy, granite albino, and countless others...
Id be interested to hear of any morphs that *did* just spring up unexpectedly from random / normal breedings in someones collection, the way i understand it theres a tiny tiny chance that anything could mutate like *that* (clicks fingers)
oh well.. just some ponderings for tonight.
