I was hoping to utilize some of the dead space in my tank perhaps by adding a snake that perfers and arid climate and a likes to climb, thus using some of the emptyness of the upper portions of my tank... any ideas on a species?

Na wouldn't even think about it if I were you.
Remember they are not going to stay in that "empty" spot. A snake like the leos is going to roam about of a night/day to regulate their body temperature.
If you house a snake with your gecko then you are soon only going to have a snake.
