New rescue leo...Parazap questions

AlteredMind99 Apr 29, 2005 06:32 AM

Someone surrendered a crested gecko and a leopard gecko to my clinic the other day. The crested had severe mbd and didn't make it through the night. The leo is a very skinny female, she is definately an adult, and only weighs .7oz, im not sure how many grams this is though as our scale only does fractions of ounces. She has parasites and a bad eye infection that makes it really hard for her to see. I have been tweezer feeding her insects and although her appetite isn't big, she is eating. She ate 2 crickets the first day, 3 waxies the second, and 3 crickets yesterday. She was wormed for the first time yesterday.

I am curious about Parazap that i hear you all talk about so much. I have heard that deworming can often cause a decrease in appetite and that parazap can counteract that. This poor little girl realy cannot afford to stop eating so i would like to get some parazap just in case. Problem is i know nothing about it. Where do i get it? How do i prepare it? What exactly is it?

Im going to be bring the little girl home as soon as i get her eating on a regular basis, i will take some pictures to show you, its really sad what some people do to there animals....

Parazap is crap.

Calling your site a "clinic" can be misleading, especially when you aren't aware that this product is available like candy everywhere: auctions, shows, anyone!

Your best bet is to contact your local reptilian specialist for straight advice. If the animal has a parasitic infection, Parazap is no healer.

Uhmm where is your research saying parazap is crap?

A lot of people use it especially for bearded dragons. My female leopard gecko was a picky eater who just didn't pick up any weight. Instead of Parazap I got the cheaper Worm Guard which has the same ingredients as parazap. I gave it to both my male and female in the form of a tea and both their apetites increased dramatically.

If there is a chance that your new gecko has a severe parasite infection, I would get stronger stuff from the vet and dose her with that. IMO parazap and worm guard work well and if you do a search for parazap here on the site, you will find a lot of good stuff being said about both products.

I use parazap regularly for bearded dragons as a preventitve measure. I have also used it to help recover a sick beardie(also in conjunction with presricption meds). Although, I have never tried it on my leos, I am satisfied with the results in my dragons. Best bet would be to get real meds from a vet first. Especially if she is as ill as she sounds. If you want to give the parazap a whirl order it here http://www.parazap.com Its a little jar but it lasts forever. Good Luck, hope this all works out for you.

Well since i work at a vet clinic and that is what i am talking about i do not think it is misleading to call it a clinic at all.

I was not talking about using parazap as a medicine, she has already been dewormed once, and has 2 more to go. I was talking about using it as an appetite stimulant if she began to refuse food as i have heard that dewormed can sometimes cause a decrease in appetite.

When you say "clinic" I'm not sure if you have access to veterinary supplies but the Leo need the following ASAP:

** Caution: if you do not know what you are doing, do not have the proper resources to create the suspensions, or do not have access to Panacur or Baytril, to the VET ASAP

I think its great that the little one is eating but I'd go ahead and do the wormer and anti-bac anyway. Especially if she has an eye infection. And sorry, I'm not sure how to mix eye drops.

"Wormer":
Panacur 0.1 mls in an Oraplus suspension at 0.9 mls. I'd give around 0.02 mls for each gram or 2 of weight. Less is better if unsure but weighing is a must. I'd do one dose now and then again in a week or 2.

Antibiotics:
I'd put Baytril [(32.3mg/ml)-0.02 mls] in an Oraplus suspension [(3.23mg/ml)- 1.8 mls] and syringe it. I'd do about 0.02mls per gram or 2. Daily for 2 weeks and see what happens***

*** VERY IMPORTANT: confer with someone to see if they think these suspensions are fine. I'm pretty sure this won't be too strong and may be too weak, but I take no responsibility!

yeah, she has already been put on anti-biotics for her eye and dewormed with panacur by the vet at the clinic i work at. I was just looking for an appetite stimulant because, although she is eating, she isn't eating very much

I'd say you're already doing a great job if she's eating anything at all. It took me months for some of my rescues. As long as she'll take food a little bit, I wouldn't worry. The meds will help her feel better and once her mind is off the other problems, she'll eat fine.

Panacur dosing actually increased one of my sickling's appetites.

One word of Caution:
I swear this isn't an empty statement, I just can't find the medical article I read it in! I read that certain over-the-counter rescue remedies can actually harm reptiles by building up in their digestive tract (all the vitamins and minerals, to be exact) Too much of a good thing. This is obviously contingent on which one you use and how often/for how long.

I completely agree with you which was why i wanted to check before adding anything else to her. She is eating...a few insects a day which i though was great and hopefully after the parasites are gone she can put on some real weight. Thank you for your replies, as soon as she is well enough i will be bringing her home to continue her treatments. I will get a pic to show you when i have the chance...its very sad, but she is doing good so far!
