I use playsand I bought from home depot. Just make sure the bag says play sand because they also sell the industrial stuff.

Chucks seldom see flat ground. I would say use as many rocks as you can as long as they can be stabilized. I would also say to simply line the remainder of the bottom with flat rocks. The only draw back with building a fortress is cleaning the poop out & moving the rocks around.
But,if I were a chuck ( and you were a carpenter), I would rather have my cute little belly scales resting on a rock than on plywood.

wow. do u even see them very often? im guessing its impossible to catch a chuck in there in less than 10 minutes...

Both did very well for me in captivity. They tame down just like a lizard will in a tank. Some chucks will never tame down inside or out, but I think David has been pretty good at handfeeding flowers from time to time. He has a pretty good pic of one of his adult females standing on her hind legs begging for a dandelion flower. My male chuck is starting to do that now too...
