Sarawaks - Finally taking off!

5rings Apr 29, 2005 05:13 PM

This is my female Sarawak from BG's 03 clutch. Both her and my male have been finicky eaters up until the last month or so. I cooled them down in Feb and moved them to 28qt shoe boxes with small hides(from the 4' x 2's that I had them in)and violoa! They are eating anything and everything I throw at them. Their colors and attitudes are improving as well. So there is your arguement in favor of bloods in small cages - they just do better in cramped quarters.

Nice little one you got there. That is the trick with all bloods is getting them in comfortable quarters not too big nor too small. Glad they are doing well for you. I know Bob got more eggs this season so I hope more people are able to experience the thrill with keeping sarawaks.

Rich,

Thanks. They are a nice snake. Their colors are certainly more subtle than some reds but they have great contrast and nice demeanors. I hope that some list members are able to pick up some of Bob's new clutch. I was excited to get mine but it took months to find the right combination. Hopefull they will be ready to breed next year but it looks like a long shot.

How are the Borneo eggs coming?

Hey,
Sarawak short-tails, are very closely related to the Borneo short-tails and are technically the same species. However, they hail from the western side of the Island on the Malaysian side west of the Penambo mountain range (Sarawak), and were long thought to be a separate subspecies, until a study which included a close look at the DNA make up, said otherwise, and they are now considered a geographical morph of the Borneo short-tail, hence, it shares the same scientific moniker as the Borneo short-tail (Python Breitensteni). However, anyone that owns these marvels knows that they are a uniquely different animal and have characteristics very different from that of the Borneo's whose name they share in the scientific literature.
