New WC Female Corkbark

Mad_1234 Apr 29, 2005 08:29 PM

I just recieved a new WC corkbark. She is in the best condition of any WC leaf tails I have gotten and was up and alert and moving around the cage as soon as I put her in. She is also only about 1/2 to 3/4 the size of my adults so I plan on breeding her to one of my CB hatchlings. Thank you Reptile Depot!!!

Here is a picture of her right out of the box.

looks like you got the female that was originally paired up with the male they separated for me. lucky for you a) shes in good shape, and b) she wasnt shipped THE DAY BEFORE YOU ASKED. also, i would recommend checking the toe pads on her. fortunately for me, even though RD got three strikes in the very first purchase i bought from them, they were very accomodating and willing to admit their mistakes. but i really stress to you that you get a good look at her toe pads, mine was covered in mites.

Mad_1234 Apr 29, 2005 09:26 PM

I'll check her for mites once she settles in a little bit more. There is nothing I can do about it anyway right now. I know you use Reptile Relief to treat mites. Can you get that just at the pet store?

just type it in ! I use it on all wc critters that arrive with chiggers and such.

yea, you can get it at various petstores such as petsmart and whatnot. i've gotten a few bottles in my VIP ticket courtesy bag at local reptile shows, so i guess ive gotten lucky. it's worked pretty well so far.

If someone already said this, I apologize, I didnt read the rest of the thread...

If they are the red external parasites there is a treatment option that is much safer, partocularly for a female...

Get some mineral oil on a q-tip, be sure to saturate the mite with it. Wait about 20 seconds, and you can rub/wipe the mite off with the Q-tip. The oil suffocates them and they let go... REAL easy way to eradicate them. It hard to get them out of the toes though...

Love this forum and wanted to get a chance to comment.

This gentleman did call to say he did find some red mites in the toe pad area but no where else. We do an inspection and if mites are present we treat them. We did not check between the toe pads and missed them, but this is the first time we are hearing the toe pads were "covered" in mites. We did treat the cage with Healthy Habitats natural mite spray after we learned of this so hopefully Matt there will be no issue, but a follow up is always recommended.

With regards to shipping, it did go out a day earlier and that was our fault. No one was home because of our error so the package did sit on the doorstep. Luckily for the animal, our mistake did not cost him his life because the temps were mild. The animal left well hydrated and very active. It was reported to us as very active, but dehydrated after its day on the doorstep. We extended the guarantee for 30 days and asked that we be contacted with a status in that period. Our shipping error was inexcusable.

Corkbarks in our experience seem to be the hardiest species of uroplatus and do well in captivity. They often arrive to us somewhat dehydrated (like all other uroplatus), but respond the quickest and bounce back immedately.

We love to visit this forum to see everyones pics and experiences. Its exciting to see the success people are having with breeding these amazing geckos. Hopefully we will see a large community of captive bred uroplatus.

yea, really no hard feelings guys...as i said that corkbark has really pepped up a lot in the past few days, and while the mites weren't expected, the external parasites are some of the easiest to deal with if you deal with em early. hats off to you guys for warning the other people you sold corkbarks too, thats something very responsible you might not expect from your average run-of-the-mill gecko supplier. i've only ever heard good things about you, thats why i chose to do business with you and while i was a bit sketched out by the situation originally, you guys dealt with it better than i ever expected. now i hope i can just get him fattened up like my other 3 corkbarks, then we'll be on our way!

and last time i checked, there was only 1 mite left on him...looks like i got all the others out of the toe pads with the reptile relief. somehow one made it up to his lower hind leg, but that one's marked for death!!!

i figured it was just one of those random unlucky experiences, and like i said, im very happy with the way it was handled. happy to see you guys around the forums as well!

my next leaftails are gunna be corkbarks if i can get my hands on some. they seem like their hardier than other leaftails for some reason.

Mad_1234 Apr 29, 2005 09:30 PM

Yeah, If you can get good quality imports corkbarks seem to acclimate very well and they are very hardy. Of the people I know that keep them they have had no troubles with them, my other female did come down with a mystery infection though but she has responded to treatment very well. The only problem with corkbarks seems breeding. They are a very problimatic species when it comes to breeding.

agreed, ive had a trio for a year now, but never observed breeding, supposedly ive gotten 1 pair of good eggs, 2 pairs of inferts in this time. too bad i came across the good eggs too late after something got to them.

She sure is a good looking corkbark. I must say, she is in pretty good condition for a fresh WC. I love their light strip of coloring by their nose. I think that is so cute. I just received a pair of corkbarks from LLL myself. I will post pics soon.
