hondo breeding season commenced

rtdunham Apr 29, 2005 09:10 PM

I didn't warm my hondos til the first of march this year, so breeding activity has only recently begun. One of the first copulations was between my snow male and one of the double het females that will be offered him.

He began cruising her as soon as she was put in his cage.

and within minutes they were hooked up.

These breedings will produce 1/4 snows, 1/4 albinos het/anerythristic, 1/4 anerys het albino, and 1/4 double hets for snow. I'm also going to breed my snow males to an anerythristic female (to produce additional anerythristics het/albino, which have been very popular on pre-orders) and to an albino (to produce additional albinos het/anery, also popular as they're the ideal mates for those anery/albs.)

sperm samples are expressed from the females after copulation and examined under a microscope. I rate those with live sperm as ^ or ^^ or ^^^ in increasing order of sperm counts. This male and this cop rated ^^^. Sperm counts are usually consistent for a given male once it's up to speed (the first cop or two might have a lower count than subsequent ones).

I love that snow!

I guess it's like the old saying:

"a bad day of herping is better than a good day of work".
