black ratsnake pet material?

zakbag_darlde666 Apr 30, 2005 01:34 AM

Does anyone know how black ratsnakes do as pets? I wasnt really considering an American snake until I saw a huge (6') black ratsnake on my grandparents driveway today. I got my snake hook out, picked it up carefully, and it only hissed once and didnt attempt to strike. Seems like it would be a great pet. Anyone got an oppinion? Anyone know what they eat?(HAHA!,thats a joke) My favorite non-venomous American snake is the Indigo but I dont think Ill be able to have one of those since Id be looking at jail time if I got caught with one in captivity. They really are great snakes though. I picked a 6 fooeter up to move it off a dirt road once and it was calmer than a tame ball python. Too bad jackass rattlesnake roundup jackass's and housing developments had to ruin it for the rest of us.

They make GREAT pets, especially if you get a captive-bred one.
I saw your post below and was surprised that nobody mentioned any of the North American Ratsnakes. They make some of the best first snakes a person can own. Don't keep the 6-footer you found...Let that one be where it belongs. You can find black rats, cornsnakes and many other N Am Ratsnakes very inexpensively, especially if you go to a reptile show (click on Events, above). I would highly suggest a visit to both the ratsnake forum and the cornsnake forum. Duffy

A cornsnake, by the way, fits ALL the criterea you have listed below. Many other ratnsnakes do, too. :D
