test holes?

Rouen Jul 11, 2003 10:17 AM

yesterday evening my new girl (theia) was scratching the ground, almost looked like test holes but whenever she came to a small rock she'd stop to sniff it like it was a worm or something which kinda makes me think she was taking the time to look for food rather than look for a nest site..
when they get into nest mode do they normally get distracted by insects?
thanks

Rouen,

Once a female is searching for a nesting site, she normally isn't distracted by much. They will typically walk around various parts of the habitat and sniff, typically after all the other boxies have gone to bed (4pm - 8pm). Actual nest digging or test holes are dug out with the back legs, not the front legs.

The digging also can last hours and if she hits a rock or determines it's the wrong density, she will abandon the dig. I've seen this happen after 5 hours of digging. Meticulous, they are.

Hope this helps.

Paul

I mean small rocks, really small rocks almost pebbles,
small enough for her to bite but not eat..

that sounds like hunting behavior. She may also be in need of a calcium boost. Drop in some cuttlebone.

I've been giving her a calcium suppliment every other(or every other OTHER) meal
she gets reptical and herptivite.

who knows then... maybe she's just acting out something we have no understanding off.
