you said your local pet store stocks pinheads right? i'd go back to see if they have a new batch of pins. i know my local store has pins, but the size is inconsistent from week to week because crickets grow fast.

You can always try the wild fruit fly method, but it isn't reliable, and often attracts more ants than flies. Put out fruit, open windows, etc...I hate it...

IF you live near a college or University, preferably one with a genetics department, CALL THEM!!
Find out the number to one of the genetics offices/laboratories, call them, speak to a research student/professor/graduate student, etc. Ask if they have any spare drosophila/hydei cultures that you can have.
North Carolina State has a good genetics program, and EVERY time I have gone there, I was allowed to take WAHTEVER I WANTED fromt he garbage can. They had literally HUNDREDS of cultures in the garbage, many of them were still perfectly fine, and lasted weeks longer. I had saved 2 seperate clutches of calyptratus by doing this. It is very safe to say that nearly ALL colleges with genetics programs do research with fruit flys. Fruit flies are used in great numbers because of their fast life cycles, they are, consequently, disposed of in equally great numbers. Heck, they even gave me a half dozen fresh cultures of hydei flies because they had no present use for them. Let them know what purpose it's for, so they can be sure they don't have any contaminants in the culture(but the usually keep them pure), AND ask for flightless or wingless flies if possible. And keep in mind, people in Genetics will usually find your hobby very interesting, so if you're nice, they'll HOOK YOU UP.

Try it

Ya know...when I looked at their shipping I sort of wondered about that but figured you had spoken to them. I still suggest trying the ones I previously listed and TELL them the situation. Try The Drosophila Company (drosophila is the latin for FF).800-545-2303 They are in Coral Springs so they may be willing to ship overnight - just make sure the carrier does a SATURDAY Delivery to your home! They won't to certain rural areas - like mine.

Didn't Sonia (anson) offer to send you some? I would if I had enough but I am just getting some backup cultures started

Yes, Sonia graciously offered me hers...but since I thought I had my problem solved because of reptilefood.com, I declined (not altogether, but overnight shipping). I didn't find out until this morning that there was a problem...so, here I am.

Ups won't ship Sat delivery to your area. We keep playing e-mail tag. I tried e-mailing you again. I don't know if you are up for the drive but I have flies if you need them. Try to contact me before 7 PM I will be leaving work by then and will be gone most of the weekend unless I hear from you.
