Can a live rabbit hurt a snake?

Misskiwi67 Apr 30, 2005 06:55 PM

We've got a debate going on in another forum about weather or not rabbits can harm snakes when fed live. The guy refuses to believe rabbits aren't as harmless as crawler rats without proof, such as photos... Those look like some pretty powerful legs to me, but nobody can come up with any examples of when anything has gone wrong... so is it ok to feed rabbits live??

but does anyone have proof?? I mean, I know it could happen, but does anyone have a story? I'm a scientific person myself, so I understand the need for some evidence...

And well, I want to be right too! LOL Anyone have any first or secondhand experience??

I've seen a rat take a chunk out of a copperhead, but as far as a rabbit, 2nd hand stories are all I've got. I sure wouldn't risk putting one live in for my bp or even a burmes. When an animal is frightened the fight or flight response kicks in and if the animal can't escape...

A man in texas, I think it was, caught a jack rabbit and while holding it up for a picture the animal kicked and disembowled the man. Meaning it cut through his shirt, opened his abdominal cavity and his bowels actually fell out. He died, but from what the article said, serious injuries are not uncommon. It would be an enormous mistake to put a live rabbit in with any reptile in my opinion. Whats the point, they kick hard, have very thick sharp nails, and teeth up to an inch long. Scientific or not, maybe a little common sense huh?
