what time of the day have you found to be the best to get these guys while they are crossing the roads-before they get hit by cars? im in the south-sun-up is pretty much the best time around here-just curious how it is around the rest of the country.

Here in NJ. The best time is in the morning right after a rain. All the places I used to find them when I was little are gone or just don't have any anymore. Even though people won't approve of this; when I see one crossing the street I pick him up and put him in my pen. I figure he will live longer in my pen then crossing the street by a burgerking.

I agree with you and do the same. A turtle crossing the road is eventually a dead turtle. I've seen this a number of times. A friend of mine refused to give me turtles he found. He would help them accross the road. One got hit, and he recognized it as one he help 3 times before. Another young one got hit, and he twice moved it far back into the woods. Another got hit and was still alive (a cracked shell) and he had helped this one too. Now, he also believes that helping cross the road is not enough, eventually the get smashed.
