method of raising humidity

manakawari Apr 30, 2005 10:26 PM

i wanna share a method i have been using recently and get your opinions.i started doing this in the winter because the heat in my apartment really dries out the air.so much that i often wake up with nosebleeds.anyway,i was told that you can mist till the cows come home.if the air is dry, misting doesnt always raise humidity for very long.so what i do is every night,i place a mug of water in the microwave untill its boiling.then i place the steaming mug in the bottom of my snakes enclosure, seal off the screen, and let him get a nice steam bath.i make sure to watch him,so he doesnt go near the mug,and i check the temps to make sure it doesnt get too hot.i know its working because the glass gets so fogged that i can hardly see in,and water droplets form all over.i also wanted to ask if anyone uses those fog machines?they look real nice but do they really raise the humidity?i was thinking of getting one but i havnt heard anyone mention them.thanks

that seems like it is raising the humidity but it also seems pretty dangerous. from what i have heard about the foggers is that they raise the humidity well but tend to break from mineral buildup and such quite quickly. the easiest way i have found to raise humidty is to buy an ultrasonic humidifier (make sure its cold not hot) and either just put that in the room if you have a small enough room to raise the humidity of the whole room or to find one which you can easily attach some pvc pipe from the hardware store and route it to your cage. as long as you keep the humidifier on a timer you should be good as if you left it on all the time your cage would be filled with dense opaque air and would raise the humidity to levels which far exceed the gtps needs and possibly cause problems with scale rot. good luck but the mug idea although it will work seems a bit dangerous to me.
