post-op Hondo not eating

blueharlequin Jul 11, 2003 10:34 AM

Hey folks.
My female Hondo that was eggbound had surgery to sort things out about three weeks ago, and while appearing to be generally in good health (and with incisions healing nicely,) she just won't eat. The last time she ate was jsut before laying, which puts her at about six-seven weeks without food. I tried a live mouse today, and she just wasn't interested. The vet is beginning to talk force-feeding already. Any extra input or ideas?

Paul, try offering different things. Hondos periodically and dramatically alter their eating habits, in my experience, although most are strong creatures of habit. Offer frozen instead. Or several live pinkies or fuzzies. Or try a rat pink or pup.

I don't want to anthropomorphize too much, but it's easy to imagine a person, following surgery, wanting to sip some soup or something instead of eating the large steak and baked potato he's used to. So that could have something to do with it, too.

good luck
terry

Yeah, she normally eats frozen, so I figured live might trigger some response. I figured I should just keep trying with the live mice instead of offering them to my other frozen-eating snakes, and low and behold, some instinct must have kicked in, and the post-op gal scarfed down two live mice last night. Whoo-hoo!
