New to lizards

phiber_optikx May 01, 2005 04:16 AM

I just got myself an eastern collard and was wondering what the best housing is.... I know I should have researched first but she sort of fell into my posession! Anyone have any good pics of their setup? ALSO a link to a good care sheet would be much appreciated. I will post a pic of her as soon as I have time. right now I am kinda busy with my corn snake. also... I read somewhere that if they have orange lines they are gravid... is this true? it seems like a huge myth after seeing some pictures. Thanks for your time!

the orange spots are no myth. they turn orange to tell the boys that they have eggs ready to be fertilized and if she lived with a male collared then she might have fertile eggs in her.
as, for webpages, eve has a really good FAQs page

will wells' has a nice history of the lizard with some husbandry

but as for me, i have my guys in a 26x24x18 cage. it has playsand as a substrate and rocks for them to climb on and places for them to hide. always make sure anything that they can climb on is secure so they don't get squished and make sure any rocks are planted all the way to the bottom of the cage so they can't dig under them and get squished

the orange is light in this pic as she was already pregnant and getting ready to lay.

This one is bigger than needs be, but shows the essential aspects of a collared cage (ie heat, terrain, and Uv).

Notice how there are plenty of hide spots in the rocks.

Talking about devotion. I very much like your new collareds too.

My yellowheads are getting bigger, I need to get a picture. The male is starting to look like a grown up, kinda lazy, adult.
