fighting females

jeune18 May 01, 2005 11:57 AM

ok, gertie and ivan the girl live in two different cages. however, sometimes i let them visit each other and things have always been fine. ivan also used to live with another female full time and nothing ever happened. well i was letting them have a play date when i heard some commotion. i thought maybe walter was trying to mate with one of them but i saw ivan with half of gertie's tail in her mouth (still attached) everytime gert ran, ivan just bit more. there were gator death rolls and everything going on. i threw a whole bunch of crickets in the cage to see if she would let go and got nothing. so finally i grabbed ivan with gertie still attached and tried bonking her on the nose, plugging her noseholes but finally tickling her chin caused her to open her mouth. gertie's tail is fine, there isn't even a cut on it. but what would make ivan be so mean? they are the same size. the only difference is that gertie is gravid and ivan is not, could that be the problem? it was really unnerving and i can guarentee they won't have a playdate again

It would always happen when they had plenty of room to run (outside the cage) and the dominant female would be the aggressor. If the dominant female would see the other female run, she would take off trying to nip at her. In my opinion, it is either a dominant thing or they think it is a cricket or type of food. My yellowheads do that if they are hungry so I have to feed them frequently.

Besides the topic, Lizards do have intelligent abilities. I know if I feed the adults, if there is not enough crickets in the cage, they would usually go for the same one. The male usually eats the cricket after being nipped and then takes off at the female for retaliation. Something I've noticed over the months.

Sorry if my grammar is all messed up, I've just finished an english essay and my brain is fried.

well, it should not be a food issue. between the 4 of them they ate 50 crickets in less than 24 hours

So, it may be a poop issue !

After 50 crix for 4 lizards, they might be fighting for a clean place to sit

ha ha, it is mostly my girls who ate that many. gertie is gravid and i think ivan will be gravid again soon. she is getting fat in her sides. their eating habits really make me poor in the spring and summer!
