Apathic RES

ericasa May 01, 2005 01:38 PM

My cute RES whom I love so much is acting weird for the past few days... He seems apathic, doesn't eat, hardly swims around. Sleeps a lot. He has this foamy white stuff peeling off his skin, which he usually scrathes. He lays mostly on the bottom of the tank or on the basking spot. I have him for 4 and a half years and he was always just fine. 2 weeks ago I got a new RES female since my last one dissappeared on me (see other post). She apparently brought somehing to the tank! She has this skin shedding also, and also white spots on her shell. I took them both to the vet today, but he only said to raise the temp and get a UV light. He also said to feed carrots, but the poor guy doesn't even want to eat. Has anyone had this? Please Help

This is a good example of why new animals should be quarentined for a period of months before being introduced to your healthy animals.

Sounds like your new turtle brought a possible fungus with her, in addition to who knows what. Did your vet do fecal tests to look for parasites?

You're right, there are many things I wish I did that I regret now, but it's too late. I've got to learn from this experience, I hope it won't cost me the life of my dear turtle. My vet didn't take fecal samples, he didn't even check the water conditions. He only gave one of the turtles a shot of vitamins, suggested a Polydine solution bath for the new turtle, and said to raise temps and UV time. He is the only Herp vet around so I dunno what to do.
