REPOST ???? Has anyone had experience with females retaining sperm for a year???

rdperry5 May 01, 2005 06:42 PM

Has anyone had experience with this or know of anyone who has?

...as posted previously...

I have two female BD's that are 4 years old (down from 6 BD's about a year ago). One of them, Lily, is gravid for the third time since I have owned her (about 2 1/2 years). The first two clutches were fertilized by the males that I had. She has not been near a male since last April....

I was wondering if there was a chance that these eggs might be fertile or not. I need to know if I might need to get the incubator ready again, or if it would be safe to dispose of the eggs after she lays them.
.....

I don't want to freeze and dispose of the eggs if there is a chance that they are fertile.

I spoke to a breeder today who had a female lay quite a few fertile eggs. I believe she said it had been 15 months since the last time she was bred. So yes to be safe I would have the incubator on hand incase your female lays a few good eggs for you. That is if you want to raise babies this year. Let them incubate and as they go bad discard them. Better then discarding them and having it in the back of your mind that some could have been fertile.

Tracey is the breeder I spoke with and you can get her email if you'd wish to email her on her web site www.beardiecrazy.com
