Need help with identification of this toad

dsydney Jul 11, 2003 11:03 AM

Hello,

I recently acquired this toad which I have not been able to identify. It is the size of the palm of my hand.

Thanks,

Deb

Where did you collect it? I would say it was an eastern Spadefoot but the eyes don't look large enough. Maybe its just the camera angle.

I purchased it from a pet shop in Austin. The information I have gathered is that the previous owner thought he was buying a "Christmas Toad" (Bufo atacamensis) but when it grew so large he realized that it was not one. I have looked at pictures of a Christmas Toad and it has a continuous lateral line and red marking on the face which this toad does not have.

It's not a spadefoot, because it has horizontal pupils. When I first saw it, i thoguht it looked just like a christmas toad, except it lacked the red and green coloration of christmas toad (bufo varigatus) I am goin to look up that latin anem that he gave you and see what's up. It's a very cool toad though. I wouldn't keep it in a kritter keeper, it's rather alrge for those.

I have two Christmas Toads, and though they sort of look alike, your right, it isn't one. Mine are pretty big for Christmas Toads at 2 1/2 inches LOL I don't know what I did, but they are still alive so I must have done something right LOL

After poking around some more my guess is still a female Bufo ictericus. The markings aren't identical, but it may just be something abberant... maybe someone knows more about this particular species to give a better judgement?
