Taking care of a uro while my friend is away...some quesitons...many in fact...

chunks_89 May 01, 2005 07:26 PM

OKIEDOKE. My friend's little brother has had his uro for about 2 years now. I'm pretty sure it's a mali (medium brown, spiky tail, smallish head, no pattern.). Correct me if i'm wrong.

I've just been researching uros lightly around ks and have found that at adult size, even malis should be a max of 16". This little one's around...6.5 or 7" max. I know he/she is over two years of age, and i also know that uros may take several years to reach sexual maturity. But i thought it was an adult 2 years ago when he brought the porr thing home.

At home, myrtle lives in a proper sized tank for her size (about two body lengths by about 4 body lengths) but has TWO basking lights, both of insufficient temperature. So. He/she has no cool-down spot, but i don't see the point anyway cause the basking temp isnt anywhere near proper. He/she has about 2-3 inches of sand everywhere in the tank. I know they are burrowing animals, but how much substrate should they have to burrow? There is a rock in the tank on which to bask, and a habba-hut type thing for shelter (but a bit of a big space for that small of a lizard).

My friend's brother has completely neglected the uro and his mother now feeds it and turns on/off the lights (at a terribly unstable day cycle!).

His MOM feeds the uro mostly packaged salad greens, so assorted garden type greens like red cabbage/lettuce, romaine, etc. Just think salad. AND carrot shavings. Dusted I-don't-know-how-often with herptivite.

I myself have three veiled chameleons, a bearded dragon, and two golden bell frogs. I've got the reptile thing down, just not quite for uros.

Oh and as well, they gave me her old tank while they're away, which is about 1.5 body lengths wide and 2.5 body lengths long. A weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee bit on the small side,i would think.
I have an old rubbermaid container i was going to use for incubation of chameleon eggs, but gave up on breeding. It's about 1.5 by 3 feet, and i could clamp a lamp on the side.

As WELL (this list doesnt end does it), the uro hsa NEVER been offered UVB!!! EEK! i'm going to scavenge an older uvb light of mine from the chams, but it's definitely depleted and probably wont do anything, but its the best I can do for now.

Please tell me ANY corrections that must be made to her diet and husbandry. As far as behaviour, she's very docile, sleeps most of the time, but does eat a decent amount of veggies.

Thanks muchly, and I'm sure myrtle does too.

(i'm not sure if its a male or a female, if it's only 6-7 inches and they reach up to 16, then its way too early to be sexing! any tips?)

no offense, but i think your friend needs a good bonk on the head. you should have a talk with him about the responsibilities of owning an animal. i also agree that i would ask to keep him, unless he has a change of heart in taking care of it.
you can always take him out in the sun supervised for like 15-20 minutes if it is warm enough, that should help get some calcium absorbed. get the temps up to 120 and don't let the cool end drop below the high 80s during the day. as for a good hide spot, go to walmart or something and buy the saucer to a plant pot and cut a hole in the side. they like snug spots to sleep in.

Also, the sand is fine at that depth.

If you can switch the greens over to more substantial greens, that will give more nutrition for the bulk. Try mustard greens, dandelion greens, endive, escarole, collard greens, turnip greens, etc. No spinach, chard, or beet greens, though - they bind nutrients.

Is there a possibility that it's an Indian uro? They are mostly tan or grey with no pattern. Malis tend to have some kind of marking, even if it's just a mottled back. Indians are very slightly shorter in length than Malis, too. There are great pictures of the two species at Deer Fern Farms, the site mentioned above.

No red cabbage! Or green for that matter. I think chards are a as well.

AS for the basking temps, bigger bulb and/or lower the bulb to raise the temps, while making sure he can't reach the bulb. If the two spots are not allowing any cool areas, lose one of them.

Good luck.

I switched up an already too-powerful light on one of my veileds with the uro's light, they are both much happier now. The uro is alert and i was happy to see her run waay frmo me while i picked her up today! I've been trying to get an old broken lamp working with a new 8.0 UVB bulb (exo-terra, they work great for my chams). I normally do have a steady supply of kale for the chams, beardie and crix but do not have any right this instant...i shall have to get some.

I live in eastern Canada so warm weather is on it's way but not warm enough for the uro. Right now i'd say its about 11 or 12 celcius...so 60ish F? I could take the uro out for 5-10 mins a day unless it's raining.

My house is also very very old so my windows might not block much UVB, I could hold her in the sun through a window, or better yet, placer her in the way of the sun in my room where she is already.
I'll check out that site too.
Thanks very much everyone, and YES i am going to ask for the uro, even though i can't really handle more pets...i want to rescue her.

Actuall I also have a rabbit and a budgie...can i crush some alfalfa pellets for her (ill just call the uro a her for now) and mix in a bit of small bird seed?

I'm in central Halifax! Nice to know of a fellow halifax regioner! I just asked my friends brother for the uro and he got pissed and blocked me on msn...he's one of the most immature kids i know..hes just turned 13 I think...he's immature for a 13 year old so imagine that.
I myself am only 16 but I've got great reptile experience...i need to convince him to let me keep her...I could be an A-hole and call the spca or something...I might if he doesnt take proper care of her...GARGH
thanks for help

Indian (hardwickii) is the easiest to distinguish. Their tail is the most unique with lots of tiny "not quite" spikes on the tail and it's very poseable compared to my other Uros. They actually do get patterning on their backs and tend towards some yellow coloration. White bellies and black spots in the crease of each rear leg. Thier heads are also much shorter than all other species I have.

No definitely not an Indian uro. She's a deep tan/light brown with SOME tiny lighter spots on her, not what i'd call pattern (thats coming from a Chameleon person...so please understand:P).
And she has fully developped tail spikes.

You wouldn't happen to have a pic of this uro, would you? It would help tremendously in identifying it.

Here's a pic of my male uro when he was still young. I hope it helps.
