You seem to ask alot of questions, it makes me think you are trying. I laso think you are not trying hard enough and are looking for the quick fix.
Yes, you can use cypress mulch. I use it myself for a couple of reasons. I only use it for my tegu and new monitors. It holds moisture and I believe dehydration is the biggest killer of pet monitors, stress comes in second and neglect is a close third if not the same and tie for second.
Any new monitor that comes to my house is put in a large rubbermaid tub filled with cypress mulch, a water bowl and a basking site. The only time they see me for the first 2 weeks is once a day to offer food,water and spot clean.
After that they are moved to a new cage filled with dirt.
If they don't use the dirt I offer them, I find different dirt or try different mixures until I find what "The Monitor" wants.
The other reason I use it is because I buy large quanities at the end of gardening season for 50 cents a 40 lb. bag.
