Oh no Monitor in trouble ( resp infection?) please help

jermaine May 01, 2005 09:39 PM

Hey guys I went out of town and left my house sitter to take care of my yellow ackie which Ive had for 5 years. I was out of town for about 1 week and all I asked her to do was plug in the electricity to heat the tank and feed it and she didnt notice the flood light had busted and the poor guy has gone 5 days without heat in a very cold house and I came back to see him with a very serious injury it seems like a resp infection. It has its head up high and is struggling to breath. I immediatley put a light on and it began to convulse almost and get on its back I put him back on his stomach and now that the temps are better he seems to be doing ok. He has his head up in a 90 degree angle but seems to be doing fine. What are the neccesary measurements I can take to help save its life? I feel so guilty but if theres any advice you can all give me I would highly appreciate it. Feel free to ask any questions if I missed any.

I hope the critter makes it through this. I believe it will, these critters are alot tougher than us puny mammals.
This is another reason to run lights 24/7 and to only let someone with atleast basic knowlege tend to your critters when you are away.
I lost power here a few weeks back when a large limb fell and knocked my power out. It took the power copmpany almost 2 weeks to get the line fixed. My little generator did little to run the necessities so my lizards went with little to no heat.
So, they went underground and came back up when it warmed up.

Ok I was suggested to get some baytril and take it to the vet but I strongly think I shouldnt do that it seems to fragile to take out of the cage. What can I do as far as that? Is it very neccesary to get antibiotics? If it is I will.

Well, if it is too fragile to remove, that is a sign to see a vet.
My motto is, when in doubt, see the vet.

So if its too fragile to take out can I just ask the vet for some antibiotics instead of bringing him over there?

Vets go through the agony of Veterinary School so they know how and when to administer medicine. That is why there are vets that you bring sick animals to, and not Joe Schmoe in the alleyway...

While I do not know your situation, it seems to me as if you are trying to save a couple of bucks by avoiding the vet. It is sad to see so many people who do the same; they are not willing to spend what is needed in order to ensure the health and survival of their animals. Whether it is skimping on caging, supplies, food items, etc, or failing to take an animal to a vet to get treatment. That is not responsible pet ownership in my mind....

It just seems to me that you are trying to avoid the vet due to the rather high bill which would most likely follow. I guess you must ask yourself, how much do you value the life of your monitor at? Me, I would shell out whatever costs are necessary if one of my animals became sick or injured... but I guess that's just me.

Good luck with your animal, and please, go see the vet. Cheers

Take it to the vet and let the vet see it. Hell carry the whole cage if you are afraid to move it from the cage.
There is no quick fix you will find on the internet.
If the lizard is in that bad of shape, you have 2 choices, either take it to a vet or dig a hole for burial.
